With new features that give the model impressive fuel economy and extra driving convenience, the Optima PHEV is entering the spotlight and is poised to impress the growing green car demographic.
Back on our home turf in time for the biennial Busan International Motor Show, Kia Motors radiated green energy for the crowds this year, revealing new eco-friendly models and concepts. Among our 23 beautifully displayed cars, the spotlight shone brightest on three Kia models in particular, the Kia K5 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), making its exciting debut in Korea, the Kia Telluride concept in Asia, and the Kia K7 Hybrid (HEV), the world.
Kia’s first ever eco-friendly vehicle was the Kia Besta EV. While the model was not developed for commercial markets, the Besta was used for live broadcasting during the 1986 Asian Games and 1988 Seoul Olympics. The Kia Sportage EV succeeded the Besta in 1999. The knowledge behind the development of these two models came to serve as the basis for all other electric models to follow.

“Kia debuted two new hybrids at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, the Niro and the plug-in Optima hybrid. They’re two of the four alt-powertrains Kia promised to have in place by this year—the other two are the Soul EV and standard Optima hybrid—with about a half dozen more on the way, debuting by 2020. We sat down with Michael Sprague, COO for Kia Motors America, and Orth Hedrick, the automaker’s vice president of product planning, to talk about how Kia sees its future in EVs, hybrids, and other alternative powertrains.”
